Reddit Karma Thresholds: What New Accounts Can't Do

You can create a Reddit account in 30 seconds — but you can't actually use most of it yet. A large share of subreddits enforce minimum account age or karma before your posts and comments become visible.

How the gates work

• Account age gates: many subs require accounts to be 3–30 days old before posting. Some high-traffic subs require more.
• Karma gates: thresholds from 10 to 500+ combined karma are common. Comments are often less restricted than posts, but both can be filtered.
• Silent filtering: automod removes your post instantly and you may never be told. Your comment looks visible to you but isn't to anyone else — the same mechanic behind shadowbans.

Why this matters for marketing

A founder who creates an account on Monday and posts a product comment Wednesday in a gated sub has accomplished nothing — the comment never rendered. Worse, several removals in a row patterns like spam to Reddit's sitewide systems.

The fast, legitimate path

1. Days 1–2: set up the profile properly (avatar, bio — real humans have these), join target subs, upvote genuinely interesting posts, make a handful of comments in friendly, ungated subs (r/AskReddit, hobby subs, r/CasualConversation).
2. Days 3–6: comment consistently in your target subs — pure helpfulness, zero promotion. Comments earn karma faster than posts early on.
3. Day 7+: most mid-tier gates are now open. Begin value-first replies that mention your product sparingly and disclosed.

A week of patience buys years of account health. There's no shortcut worth taking — aged accounts sold online are farms Reddit detects, and CommentSurge's warm-up roadmap exists precisely because this week is non-negotiable.
