From Thread to DM: A Warm Outreach Playbook That Books Demos

Someone just posted "desperately need a tool that does X, tried everything" — and X is literally your product. A public reply is good. But the founders who close these threads do something more: they DM.

Cold DMs are spam. Warm DMs — sent to someone who publicly asked for what you sell — are just... answering the question privately. Reddit allows it, the recipient welcomes it, and it books meetings.

When to DM vs. comment

Comment when: the thread has public value (others will read it for months), it's in a big sub, the question is somewhat general.

DM when: the poster described a specific workflow, it's a "recommend me a tool" post, they're clearly a decision-maker, or the sub bans all product mentions (answer privately instead of not at all).

Best play: do both. Comment publicly (it ranks, it helps others), then DM ("also messaged you — wanted to give you the specifics").

The 4-step sequence

Step 0 — The opener (day 0). Reference their specific post in the first line. Ask one question about their situation. No pitch, no link. "Saw your post about X — are you doing that manually now, or…?" If they reply at all, you're warm.

Step 1 — Follow-up value (day 2–3). Share something genuinely useful regardless of the product: a quick method, a resource, a shortcut. You're proving you help, not sell.

Step 2 — The offer (day 4–5). Now the soft pitch: "We built X for exactly this — want me to set you up a free week to see if it fits?" Concrete, low-friction, easy to decline.

Step 3 — The breakup (day 7). Graceful close. "No worries if timing's off — ping me if it becomes a priority." You'd be surprised how many "not now" prospects return in a month.

The rules that keep you safe

  • Only DM people who publicly signaled the need (never scraped lists)
  • One opener + three follow-ups max — then stop forever
  • Personalize every opener; templates with wrong context are worse than nothing
  • Track every prospect — notes, status, next step. Memory doesn't scale.

We built this pipeline into CommentSurge's CRM because our own DMs were closing 10x better than cold email — same product, warmer room.
